Kids Bike Giveaway
No Bike Swap Event in 2020
Every June for more than 16 years we’ve hosted a Kids Bike Swap. Families bring in a bike their kid has outgrown and get trade-in value for a bigger bike.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 requires that we do something different this year.
Instead of a big Kids Bike Swap event, we are working directly with local organizations that serve low income families. Parents or caregivers can request a bike for kids who need one.
Rather than group work parties in the shop, volunteers with mechanical skills are taking bikes home to refurbish and bring back. Contact us if you’d like to volunteer.
Our goal is preparing 50 bikes for 50 kids.
It costs about $25 in new parts and effort to repair each bike. Please consider a cash donation to support our free bike giveaway program.
2019 Kids Bike Swap
Thanks to everyone who participated in our 2019 event – both volunteers and families. We traded more than 100 bikes, fitted 70 free helmets, and saw a lot of happy faces on Sunday June 9.
It takes hundreds of volunteer hours, and lots of new tires, bike seats, and parts to make old kids bikes safe and ready for new owners. We couldn’t do it without the people who volunteer time or give money to this free program.
Please consider making a financial donation in support of this year’s Kids Bike Swap.
How it Works (usually)
A parent or guardian must come with each child to the Swap.
Kids can trade in the bike they have outgrown and pick out a bike that fits them. Kids donate their old bike, and receive credit for the value based on its size and condition. A parent or guardian must be present at the Swap.
The credit can be used towards purchasing a bigger bicycle, which may cost a bit more. Typically, when a bike is swapped, the family is able to take home their newly refurbished ride for $20 or less. Cash or checks preferred. We also accept credit cards.
A free helmet comes with every bike – and we’ll make sure it fits!
About Swap Bikes
Bicycles with wheel sizes from 12-inches to 24-inches are ready for trading.
If your child needs a larger bicycle, we may be able to accommodate them.
All bikes are safety checked and refurbished by Sharing Wheels volunteers before they enter the Swap.
No bikes will be swapped before 11 a.m. If you arrive early, please stay out of our “bicycle corral.” If you arrive really early, we might even put you to work helping set up.
Before 12 noon, you must bring a bicycle to swap for credit to enter the Swap. After 12 noon, bicycles can be purchased for the value listed, without the need to trade.
The Swap closes at 2 p.m.
