Is Your Bike Ready for a New Owner?
Sharing Wheels accepts donations of good quality adult bikes that we can make ready for a second home.
If you have an adult bike you think we might want, please send a photo to sharingwheels@gmail.com. We’ll let you know if we can put your bike to good use.
We only accept WORKING e-bikes. All e-bikes must have all their parts, pieces, keys and batteries working and functional in order to be accepted.
We request a $5 donation with every bike to help cover the cost of refurbishing. Kids bikes cost us up to $25 in parts, adult bikes about $50 or more.
If we accept a bike that we cannot reasonably refurbish, we will recycle your bike.
We never accept used helmets. We cannot verify their safety and will throw them away.
We only solicit kid bikes when we are actively working on our kids bike programs in the spring and fall. If you bring in a kid bike in excellent condition before then, we will store it with our friends at Coastal Community Bank (who have donated space downtown).
Some used bikes we never take
Some used bikes are too broken, rusty or cheaply made to refurbish. Sharing Wheels does NOT generally accept:
- “Department store bike” brands like Magna, Roadmaster, Huffy, Hyper. These cheap bikes aren’t worth fixing if broken. We WILL take these bikes if they are in like-new condition.
- Broken or ‘just not working’ e-bikes
- Broken or bent frames (unless, for instance, there are quality parts on it that are worth saving)
- Very rusty bikes that have been stored outside (a little rust is OK)
- No bike helmets (unless brand new).
If your bike is junk, please take it to a metal recycling company (see below) for recycling.
Where to recycle used bikes
Non-working bikes can be recycled – whole. You do not need to remove tires or other non-metal parts. Take your bike to:
- CMR Auto & Metal Recycling, 5438 47th Ave NE, Marysville (360) 658-5915. Open Tue – Sat, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- Braven Metals, 2315 N Machias Rd., Lake Stevens . Open Mon-Sat, 8:30 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. They pay by the pound.
- Everett Transfer Station (metal recycle) – 10700 Minuteman Drive, Everett. Open Mon – Sun, 7 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
The following charities accept donations of working bicycles (tires pumped, chain on, etc):
- St Vincent De Paul Thrift Store, 6424 Broadway, Everett (425) 355-3504. Open Mon-Sun 10 a.m. -2 p.m.
- Goodwill Downtown Everett, 3003 Hoyt Ave (425) 252-61639. Open Mon-Sun, 10 a.m. -7 p.m.
How We Use Donated Bikes
Our staff and volunteers refurbish most bikes we receive. We give tune-ups and new parts as needed to make bikes safe and functional. We sell some bikes “as is.”
Bike sales support all of our free and low cost programs. Through partner nonprofits, we give some bikes to qualifying adults who need transportation, or to children in low income families.
We are always in need of volunteers with mechanical skills to help us with the backlog of bikes. If that describes you, consider volunteering with us!
